Dogs Are Not Simply Dogs – The Conversation Changes Everything

People often ask me whether I specialise in a particular breed.

The answer isn't as simple as saying, "Dogs are dogs."

Every dog has its own breed traits and characteristics, and these should never be ignored when approaching training. They are often a great indicator of a dog's natural instincts, drives and behaviours, giving us a valuable starting point for understanding the dog in front of us.

A good example from my world of dog training is the DDR German Shepherd.

These dogs were developed through carefully selected breeding programmes in the former East Germany. They are renowned for their intelligence, resilience and strong work ethic. They were bred for the qualities humans valued in working dogs: courage, stability, exceptional tracking ability, athleticism and an unwavering willingness to work. Many went on to serve with the military, border patrol, police and security organisations because they possessed the temperament and drive required for demanding roles.

Breed matters.

It gives us clues.

But it doesn't tell us the whole story.

It doesn't matter whether I'm working with a German Shepherd, Labrador, Cockapoo, Staffie or a tiny Terrier. I don't see breeds first, I see dogs. Every dog is an individual with its own personality, life experiences and way of learning. Their breed may influence how they think and behave, but they're all speaking the same language.

I've always believed that dogs talk to me.

It's difficult to explain. From an early age I just seemed to understand them. Maybe it came from spending my life around dogs, beginning with a background in security dog handling and training. Whatever the reason, I've spent a lifetime learning their language, and they're still teaching me every day.

Modern dog training has become a language all of its own.

Think about it.

Two completely different species have lived side by side for thousands of years. We've worked together, protected one another, shared our homes and built incredible relationships.

Yet many of the problems people experience with their dogs come down to one thing.

We're not having the right conversation.

Dogs are incredibly quick learners, but only when the circumstances are right. The right environment. The right timing. The right approach.

Most importantly, the right communication.

My philosophy is simple.

If your dog doesn't understand what you're trying to say, frustration grows on both sides.

The dog becomes confused.

The owner becomes frustrated.

Training becomes a battle instead of a partnership, and this this just leads to conflict or shut down.

Our job isn't to force dogs to understand us. Our job is to bridge that communication gap until we're both speaking the same language.

That's when training starts to make sense.

In my humble opinion, every dog is a working dog.

Not because every dog needs to become a police dog or a security dog, but because every dog needs purpose. Like us, dogs are driven to survive, solve problems, build relationships and find meaning in what they do. Not in our human logic but instinctual manner.A healthy mind needs challenge, direction and fulfilment.

The foundations of that relationship are, for the most part, non-verbal.

Our body language.

Our timing.

Our consistency.

Our energy.

Our ability to reward, guide and build trust.

When we understand these foundations, we don't simply teach a dog to sit or stay. We create understanding. We support learning. We build confidence. We develop a relationship based on trust rather than confusion.

Breed gives us the clues.

The individual dog tells us the rest.

That is the conversation that changes everything.
