When it comes to dog training, there's one principle that sits above all others:

Foundation. Foundation. Foundation.

Every confident recall, every calm walk on a loose lead, every reliable stay, every dog that can cope with the distractions of the real world, all of it is built on solid foundations.

Too often, people focus on the end result without appreciating the process required to get there. We ask dogs to perform behaviours they simply aren't ready for, then wonder why things begin to fall apart.

Dogs learn best through positive training in positive environments. That doesn't mean avoiding challenges forever it means creating learning experiences where your dog can understand, succeed and build confidence before gradually increasing the difficulty.

Training should always start small.

Every behaviour should be broken down into manageable steps. The more ambitious or complex the end goal, the more important it becomes to simplify the journey. Progress comes from hundreds of small successes, not one giant leap.

Think about building a house.

No one starts with the roof.

Everything depends on the quality of the foundations beneath it. If those foundations are weak, cracks will eventually appear, no matter how impressive the finished house may look.

Dog training is exactly the same.

Another way to think about it is this: trying to teach advanced behaviours before establishing the basics is like trying to repair an aircraft while it's accelerating down the runway for take-off. It becomes stressful, complicated and far more difficult than it ever needed to be.

The environment:Is the training setting helping your dog learn, or overwhelming them?
The foundation:Does your dog genuinely understand the behaviour before we increase the challenge?
The individual dog:Every dog learns at a different pace. Breed, age, previous experiences, confidence and temperament all influence how they develop.

There is no shortcut to great training.

Strong foundations create confident dogs. Confident dogs make better decisions. Better decisions lead to stronger relationships between dogs and their people.
